It is foreseen that the town of Pleven will be established as a well-known European reference centre for training in gynecological robotized surgery.
This is according to the statement made by Professor Grigor Gortchev, MD, DSc., Rector of Medical University - Pleven.

This type of training is to be conducted at TELEC – the Telecommunication Endoscopic Training Centre situated within the borders of the higher medical institution. Currently robotized surgery is performed at approximately 7 to 8 locations within Europe.

The idea to transform Pleven into a training centre of gynecological robotized surgery originated after the visit of the Rector of the University to the Unites States of America at the invitation of his American colleague - Associate Professor John Boggess, MD, a distinguished gynecologist and oncologist.

Dr. Boggess is the first who has applied this method in the worldwide practice at the University Hospital in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Since 2006 up to the present moment he has performed about 300 gynecological robotized operations.

It is expected that a second da Vinci Robot will be provided for the Centre of Telemedicine in Pleven for the purposes of the training process.

From the beginning of this year up to now Professor Gortchev and his team of specialists have performed 45 robotized operations. The da Vinci S Robot is equipped with four mechanical hands and a system for three-dimensional images of the internal organs. The surgical interventions are totally bloodless allowing the patients to make a quick recovery and come back to their everyday normal life within a week.
