Prof. Grigor Gortchev, MD, PhD was born on May 15, 1956 in the town of Veliko Tarnovo. He graduated from Higher Medical Institute – Pleven in 1982, then started working at the Surgery Department at the Hospital in the town of Tryavna. He became an assistant in 1983 at the Department of Pathological Anatomy, Higher Medical Institute – Pleven, where he worked until 1985. From 1985 to 1987 he worked as an intern at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the town of Tryavna, becoming a clinical intern at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Higher Medical Institute - Pleven from 1987 to 1990. He had been working there up to the year 1995 – as a senior assistant at first, and consequently as a head assistant. He defended his doctoral thesis having the title: “Contemporary comprehensive Study on the Non-typical Hyperplasia and the Endometrical Carcinoma” in 1992. In 1995 he was awarded with the academic rank Senior Academic Associate, 2nd Degree (Associate Professor since 1996) and became Head of Clinic of Gynecology at the Oncology Center at Higher Medical Institute-Pleven, where he has been working ever since. He was Vice-Rector of Medical Treatment from the year 1990. The academic degree ‘Doctor of Science’ was conferred on him in 2002 after defending his thesis with a title ‘Surgical Conduct and Prognosis on Endometrical Cancer І and ІІ FIGO Stage’. In December 2002 he was elected to be the Rector of Higher Medical Institute-Pleven, while in the year 2003 he acquired the academic title Professor. After transforming Higher Medical Institute-Pleven into Medical University-Pleven on November 12, 2004 prof. Grigor Gortchev was elected to be the Rector of MU-Pleven. Prof. Gorchev did a specialization course in Strasburg, France and at the Paul Strauss Center for Fight against Cancer (1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2000), also in Villejuif, Paris, France – Gustave Roussi Institute (1996, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002), and in Rome, Italy – at the Oncology Hospital Gemelli in 1998. His field of scientific study concerns the Lymphogenic Metastases with Gynecological Oncological Diseases, the Matrix body Cancer and the Contemporary Surgical Treatment of Malignant Diseases of the Female Reproductive System. He is the author of three monographs, and 81 publications in scientific magazines in the country and abroad, also of three scientific films and of 29 announcements in national and international scientific forums. Prof. Gortchev has been the first to perform in Bulgaria a laparoscopically-assisted extended vaginal hysterectomy (bloodless operation) of a woman with cervix cancer in 2004. This intervention has ranked Bulgaria among the leading countries using contemporary methods of operative treatment of this kind of diseases. Furthermore, he is also the first one who has performed in the year 2004 an operation of a woman with a cervix cancer 1st stage managing to preserve her reproductive organs. He is the proud holder of the prestigious award Medic of the Year 2004 of the Newspaper Forum Medicus for giving considerable scientific and research contribution to the development of the Bulgarian medical science and practice in the field of Gynecology and Oncology. This award has been conferred for significant organization activities in order to establish the place of MU-Pleven in the conditions of reform performed in the healthcare system and in higher medical education. In the year 2005 he was awarded with Honorary Sign First Degree by the Bulgarian Medical Council for contribution in the development of Medicine. He has been proclaimed for Person of the year 2005 by the American Biographical Institute and the Commission for International Research for Extraordinary Achievements and Noble Example for his contemporaries and the community. Prof. Gortchev is a member of the French Association of Oncological Gynecology /SFOG/, of the European Society of Medical Oncology /ESMO/, of the Bulgarian Scientific Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Bulgarian Medical Association.
