Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Department of “Medical Physics and Biophysics”, transformed into a Division “Physics, Biophysics, Mathematics and Information Technologies”, currently Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, was established in 1974 along with the Medical Faculty in Pleven.  The academic staff includes two professors (Prof. Margarita Alexandrova, DSc and prof. Petyo Bochev, PhD) one assistant professor (Marko Kolaksazov)  and one lecturer (Victoria Varbanova).

The academic staff at the Chemistry Section includes two Professors, one Associate Professor and five Assistant Professors teaching General, Inorganic, Organic, Analytical and Sanitary Chemistry at the Faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy and Public Health. The chief research goals of the Chemistry Section are Trace Elemental Analysis, Organic Synthesis and Organic Stereochemistry, Homogeneous and Heterogeneous catalysis.

The academic pursuit of Medical Biochemistry is focused into two semesters and gives the students important knowledge about the chemical mechanism of biological processes and their regulation as part of the human organism.
