Medical University – Pleven has successfully completed the implementation of project BG-RRP-2.004-0003 "Research Higher Education Institution: Medical University – Pleven", funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
At a closing information event held on May 22, 2026, in the "Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kuncho Ignatov, MD" academic hall, the results of the Strategic Research and Innovation Program "Medicine for Health" were presented. The event was attended by the Rector, Prof. Dr. Dobromir Dimitrov, the academic leadership, representatives of the Steering Committee and the Advisory Board, as well as scientists and researchers from the university.
The project, implemented under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Mariela Kamburova during the 2023–2026 period, reports significant achievements:
- 134 scientific publications indexed in Web of Science
- 7 international patent applications
- 196 participations** in international scientific forums and training programs
- The establishment of the university's first spin-off companies
- Development of key scientific fields such as electronic brachytherapy, translational oncology, bioengineering, and artificial intelligence applications in medicine
A special emphasis of the project is the support for young scientists and international cooperation with leading experts and organizations from Europe and Asia.
Among the notable academic successes are the "Pythagoras" award received by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Angel Yordanov and the election of Prof. Dr. Slavcho Tomov as a Corresponding Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS).
With the successful completion of this project, Medical University – Pleven reinforces its position as a modern research and educational center with international recognition and strong innovation potential.
