The Sector “Sports”, formerly known as the Centre for Physical Education and Sports, was established in 1974 and has been part of the Department of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation, Occupational Therapy and Sports since 2006.

Currently, the academic staff of the Sector includes two Associate Professors, three Senior Assistants, and four Lecturers. Since its establishment, three doctoral dissertations have been successfully defended within the Sector, leading to the award of the Educational and Scientific Degree Doctor.
The Sector benefits from excellent indoor and outdoor sports facilities, where practical classes in Physical Education and Sports are held for students from all full-time programmes at the university. It also supports general fitness activities and competitive sports.
In 2013, the completely renovated and well-equipped "Prof. Dr. Nedko Kyuchukov" sports complex was opened in honor of the founder and first rector of the university. The complex provides students with facilities to acquire and develop practical skills in sports such as basketball, volleyball, football, tennis, table tennis, badminton, bodybuilding, aerobics, and sport climbing.
The research activity of the Sector focuses on studies and applied projects concerning physical education and sport among young learners, with the aim of optimising curricula and improving the effectiveness of training methods and techniques.
The results of these research projects are applied in the practice of physical education and sports in the national education system.
