The Department of Pathoanatomy was founded in 1975. At present, the academic staff includes 7 assistant professors, one professor and one associate professor. A biologist and a biochemist are affiliated to the research laboratory.

The subject of Pathological Anatomy is divided into two courses: General Pathology (4th and 3rd semester)   and Clinical Pathology (6th and 7th semester. There is a written exam at the end of both courses. The training is mandatory for medical students and includes 98 hours of theory and 120 practicals and seminars.

Contents of training course:

  1. General pathology: degenerative, circulatory, inflammatory processes, tumors and immunology.
  2. Clinical pathology (system pathology): clinicopathological correlations of diseases by systems:
    • The cardiovascular system
    • Pathology of the respiratory system
    • Pathology of the female reproductive system and the breast
    • Pathology of pregnancy and the newborn
    • Pathology of the male reproductive system
    • Pathology of the secretory system
    • Pathology of the blood formation system and the lymphatic system
    • Paediatric pathology
    • Pathology of the nervous system
    • Pathology of the endocrine system
    • Pathology of infectious diseases.

The teaching staff of the department regularly participates in scientific forums on pathology and associated specialties in the country and abroad. There are 144 articles published in  Bulgarian and 15 – in foreign journals (2007-2015). Participations in congresses abroad are 34, and in the country – 293; in writing textbooks/teaching materials, and manuals – 21. The teaching staff participated in 28 research projects.

HER 2 diagnostics for breast cancer with - Chromogenic in-situ hybridization method is carried out at the department.
