Department of Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology, Parasitology and Tropical Medicine continues the work of the established in 1977 Department of Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology and Parasitology. Founder of the Department was Professor Jivka Kaneva.
Today, the Department of Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology, Parasitology and Tropical Medicine is structurally separated into two divisions: Division of Infectious Diseases and the former Division of Epidemiology and Parasitology, which was renamed into Division of Epidemiology, Parasitology and Tropical Medicine in 1998.
The Department of Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology, Parasitology and Tropical Medicine employs ten full-time academic lecturers: six Associated Professors and four Assistant Professors.
Since 1977 the training in Infectious Diseases was conducted consecutively by:
- In Infectious Diseases: Professor Jivka Kaneva, Professor Michail Radev,, Professor Ivan Dikov (Visited professors fromMedicalAcademy–Sofia), Professor Hjusnik Bojadjian, Professor Penka Ilieva. At present Bulgarian-learning teaching leads by Professor Tzetza Doichinova and Engliash-learning – by Associated Professor Galya Gancheva. Assistant Professors Doctor Christofor Christov and Doctor Chrisima Tzvetanova conduct practical classes (Bulgarian-learning teaching) and Associated Professor Galya Gancheva – English learning education.
- In Epidemiology – Professor Evgeni Gabev (visited professor from Medical Academy – Sofia), Associated Professor Vladislav Novkirishki, Professor Boris Iliev, Associated Professor Dimitar Mitov, at present – Associated Professor Dimitar Shalamanov and Associated Professor Milena Karcheva (Bulgarian and Engliash-learning education). Assistant Professor Doctor Tanja Petkova conducts the practical classes.
- In Parasitology – Professor Raiko Todorov, Professor Petar Petrov, Professor Rositza Kurdova (visited professors from National Center of Infectious and Parasytic Diseases – Sofia), and since 2004 till now – Associated Professor Milena Daskalova. In 2011 Doctor Ivelin Angelov was appointed an associated professor.
- In Tropical Medicine – the teaching conducts by all academic staff of the Department.
