History

The library at MU-Pleven is the only one of its size in North-West and Central Bulgaria, specializing in medical literature. It was established in 1974 with the main purpose of facilitating the educational, scientific and diagnostic needs of the University and the University Hospital. The library is divided into several sectors: borrowing section with free access; reading room for lecturers with Internet access; reading room for students; reading room for self-study with audio and video materials; internet hall; depository and offices. The library aims to meet the needs of the undergraduate and postgraduate students, PhD students and the lecturers at Medical University-Pleven, as well as all medical specialists in the city of Pleven and the region as a whole.

In charge of supplying of books, magazines, data bases by means of purchase, donations, exchange and subscription. The “New Books” bulletin is issued as well.

Processing and Catalogues

She is in charge of processing the new-coming literature and of data input in the catalogue system of the library which is systematic, alphabetic and official. ‘Our Authors’ and ‘World Health Organization’ card-indexes are also maintained, along with the whole library documentation.

He is in charge of servicing the readers in the Borrowing Hall and the Reading-room for students. They also register the new-coming readers, giving out books for use at home, and carry out orders for the reading-halls. They inform the readers on topics of interest and help them use the library resources fully. They are also the ones who maintain and control the preservation of the library funds.

She takes care of making the subscriptions and the daily registration of the periodicals at the library. She keeps up to date the electronic ‘Periodicals’ data base in due time and the card-index of the periodical editions which are received regularly. She offers good service and advice to readers on different issues and topics of their interest.

Rules and Regulations

The library functions in accordance with the Regulations for the Organization and Work of MU-Pleven, the resolutions of the Academic and Rector’s Councils of the University, and the normative base regulating the function of all the libraries within the country and according to the Regulations of the Library at MU-Pleven as well.

Resources

The library at MU-Pleven is boasts a rich collections of biomedical and reference editions as well as various subscriptions to international and Bulgarian magazines freely and readily available in the reading rooms of the library. An elborate electronic catalogue includes all books that have been made available at the library since 1995. A database is also maintained with all the magazines that have been received since 1974.

Cooperation

The library at MU-Pleven maintains 'cooperation and exchange' relations with many other medical and non-medical libraries at various higher education institutions within the country.

New Books Bulletin
The ‘New Books’ bulletin aims to inform the readers about the new editions received through purchase, donation or exchange. It is distributed in the departments of the University as well as in the clinical units at the University Hospitall.
