Department of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation, Ergotherapy and Sport was founded in 2006 as a successor to the activities of other departments at MU - Pleven.

The Department of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation, Occupational Therapy and Sports at the Medical University of Pleven was established in 2006 as a continuation of the former divisions of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation and Sports, which were a part of other departments at MU–Pleven.

Sector "Sport"

The Sport sector, former Center for Physical Education and Sport, was established in 1974. Since 2006 it has been a part of the structure of the Department of Physical Education and Sports. From 1994 to 2017, Head of the Sector was Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov. From 2017, the position of Head of Sector is held by Assoc. Prof. Iskra Stefanova Ilieva, PhD.

  • Development and validation of contemporary therapeutic approaches for the treatment of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular dysfunctions in the rehabilitation of socially significant diseases.
  • Modernisation and implementation of advanced methods for functional diagnostics, rehabilitation, and prevention of pathological and preclinical conditions of the musculoskeletal and central and peripheral nervous systems.
  • Highly specialised rehabilitation techniques following arthroscopic interventions on large and small joints of the musculoskeletal system.
  • Manual therapy for joint dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system.
  • Application and implementation of advanced therapeutic techniques for the treatment and prevention of soft-tissue dysfunctions and preclinical musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Habilitation and rehabilitation in congenital and acquired paediatric pathologies.

Equipment and Material Base of the Department:

The department is located on the 3rd and 4th floors of the Rectorate 1 building, Medical University - Pleven. There is also where large part of the basic courses for specialty "Medical rehabilitation and ergotherapy" are held.
